DISCOVERING BUDDHISM MODULE 13 - INTRODUCTION TO TANTRA, in Two Parts
Part 1: THREE PRINCIPAL ASPECTS: THE GROUNDWORK FOR BUDDHIST TANTRA
Buddhist tantra encompasses a rich tradition of transformative practices that are preceded by cultivating insight into three main aspects that embody the essence of the Buddhaâs teachings. With the foundational knowledge of renunciation (the wish to emerge from dissatisfaction), bodhichitta (the spirit of enlightenment), and the correct view of emptiness (the wisdom realizing the way things exist), the practice of tantra can be an effective and accelerated path to complete fulfillment of our potential.
In Part 1 of this course (Classes 1-2), using a concise text that clearly describes these three principal aspects written by the great Tibetan scholar Lama Tsongkhapa, we explore how to develop and deepen the understanding of these core concepts that serve as prerequisites for the study and practice of tantra in Buddhism.
Part 2: TRANSFORMATION AND TOTALITY: THE BASICS OF BUDDHIST TANTRA
Tantric Buddhism abounds with a variety of transformative techniques taught by the Buddha as a means for quickly attaining complete fulfillment of our potential and wholeness of being. In Part 2 of this course (Classes 3-8), we explore the presentation of tantra in Tibetan Buddhism, delineating the methods and concepts of this esoteric tradition in order to provide a practical and experiential understanding of its basic elements. Students acquire an overview of this difficult and often misunderstood subject and learn how tantric practice, when correctly done, can transform dissatisfaction and clinging into blissful, compassionate wisdom.
